Description

Claws and head of a Hia that i got from my older brother, who would catch and eventually eat him together with others (no, not for me. He was found straying in a cellar). The claws are currently hanging to dry while i offered the head a bunch of weaver ants to work on. I also received its skin (which is drying as well), though i totally missed to photograph that one for whatever reason.

It's not that i wouldn't be thankful or happy that he'd always think of me, for he knows that i collect such things....still, it's hard to handle the very thought of how they handled this thing, though. It was captured and conjoined in a closed trash bag, staying in this state days before it was killed (for having no time doing so before and for being "just a damn lizard").

One should know, though, that water monitor lizards are quite hated animals by Thai people, hence the Thai word for these lizards, "Hia", being a strong profanity (and even jinx), similar to the english "fuck/fucking..." or "asshole". Calling someone a Hia actually is one of the worst things you can do. Some people would even consult monks if a Hia entered their house - for washing away all the bad luck. There is a completely different mentality behind it all.

Still...hard to handle this mentality. I don't know. It's just kind of the same thing that i felt about the Loris skull back then.

Whatever any Thai might say, though: I like Hias. A lot. I've met so many wild ones by now (alive - calm creatures actually and quite excellent swimmers). None of them brought me bad luck so far. The opposite is the case.

Within the area of my university, there are safe and protected. As i walk around the place, i'd always find them crossing the road (most of the time unused by car, mostly it's student who use the road) and even the little one climbing the tree. Biggest one here is almost 2 and a half(?) meter long.
They are protected in my university (more specifically, in my faculty's area, since it has little forest and swamp and water-body everywhere) and we forbid students to fish in the lake to ensure they have enough food so they leave the cafeteria area alone.
So far we have no accident with them, rarely ever they bite people, and it's because the people are a jerk and try to hit them with a stick.
